  • Participants during SWIOFC Nairobi Convention Partnership meeting on Fisheries Environment in Mombasa which was officially opened by KMFRI CEO Prof. James Njiru on 26th September, 2022
  • KMFRI CEO Prof James Njiru at the Swedish Residence, Nairobi (21st September, 2022) on invitation by Sweden Ambassador HE Ms Caroline Vicini where they discussed several collaborative areas.
  • KMFRI CEO Prof. James Njiru (2nd left) signed a contract on 20th September, 2022 at the offices of PS- SDFA&BE, Nairobi for continuation of training young Kenyans in deep sea fishing . This is a strategy by GoK meant to build capacity and create employment for the youth in Blue Economy Sector.
  • KMFRI CEO Prof. James Njiru (3rd right) received title deed for an office in Rumuruti from Register of Lands Laikipia on 8th September, 2022, the County has reserved 43 acres for KMFRI for Research and Training.
  • On 5th August 2022. Prof James Njiru CEO-KMFRI had a collaborative meeting with Mr. K. Takarijanto Counsel Republic of Indonesia.
  • KMFRI Kegati hosts the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Kenya in the Hellenic Republic (Greece) Mrs Vicky Pantazopoulou met the Assistant Director of Freshwater Aquaculture (Dr Paul Orina) to discuss possible research collaboration between KMFRI and Greek institutions.
  • KMFRI CEO, Prof. James Njiru with participants during a workshop in Kisumu on Harmful Algal Bloom (HABs) project. KMFRI is collaborating with Kisii University and Bowling Green State University, USA.
  • CS, Sports and Heritage - Amb. Amina Mohamed (R), KMFRI CEO Prof. James Njiru, PS State Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Blue Economy, Dr. Fred Owino among others, after the side event on Blue Economy investment sports and the Environment.
  • On 30th May 2022 KMFRI CEO Prof James Njiru (standing 4th left) launched Beach cleanups and community awareness at Congo Beach, Ukunda, Kwale County.
  • KMFRI in partnership with Kitanda Vzw handed over a fish farming project to the residents of Bamba, Kavunzoni, Goshi location in Kilifi county on 23rd May, 2022.

Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) is a State Corporation established in 1979 by the Science and Technology Act, Cap 250 of the Laws of Kenya, which has since been repealed by the Science, Technology and Innovation Act No. 28 of 2013 which has recognized KMFRI as a national research institution under section 56, fourth schedule. KMFRI's mandate is to undertake research in "marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, and marine research including chemical and physical oceanography", in order to provide scientific data and information for sustainable development of the Blue Economy........[Read more]

 



 RV Mtafiti

RV Mtafiti is a deep sea research vessel donated by the Belgium Government and commissioned by HE President Uhuru Kenyatta on January 27, 2014. The vessel, whose length is 55.6m, is a multi-disciplinary oceanographic research vessel that plays a crucial role in the collection of ocean data and information in support of research into understanding the physical, chemical, and biological processes in the ocean as well as the scientific study of the role of the oceans in weather and climate. RV Mtafiti is therefore designed for fisheries acoustic research, oceanographic, hydrographic and geological investigations.
The vessel is equipped with two research laboratories: a biological and fisheries laboratory, and an oceanography and chemical research laboratory. It can therefore conduct:
1. Fish stock assessment surveys
2. Ocean productivity  surveys
3. Marine biodiversity surveys
4. Environmental & pollution monitoring
5. Seabed mapping
6. Benthic mapping
7. Sediment surveys
