KMFRI endeavours to continuously increase capacity of her research staff in the achievement of her core mandate. In light of this, the institute will hold training for fisheries observers - one local training and have others participate in another one in South Africa.

Part one of the training covering background information, observer protocols, sampling, data handling and reporting workshop is slated for 12th - 13th March, 2018, in Kilifi; while part two which will tackle onboard practicals on fishing operations, fish identification, data collection, data entry and reporting will be done at Ngomeni and Malindi fishing grounds from 14th to 16th March, 2018. Four technical staff were trained in South Africa as fisheries observers during the SWIOFP project in 2010.
