Dr. Chrisphine Nyamweya

Dr. Chrispine Nyamweya is a Senior Research Scientist and Assistant Director at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) with a successful 12-year experience in Fisheries and Ecological research. He specializes in describing ecosystem functioning using simulation models. Chrisphine graduated from the University of Iceland in 2017 with Doctorate Degree in Ecological modeling. While in school, Chrispine developed two models i) ROMS to describe the circulation patterns in Lake Victoria and ii) Atlantis to describe ecosystem functioning – the first end to end ecosystem model for Lake Victoria. He used the latter to predict the optimum fishing strategy that maximizes benefits for the ecosystem and humans. Chrispine is incredibly motivated to use his analytical skills to explore data, reveal patterns, trends, and associations and propose action points for sustainable management of fragile ecosystems. An ardent popularizer of science, Chrispine is passionate about using technology, big data, deep learning, and artificial intelligence to provide decision support for the management of ecosystems. He has international diplomas in Marine and Inland Waters, Resources, Monitoring, and Assessment; Fisheries acoustics; Fishbase and Taxonomy, and Designing research projects. Chrisphine is proficient in R and Python statistical programming languages and MySQL for creating and communicating with databases. He is committed to democratizing science through collaborative networks and the promotion of citizen science. To further this cause, he has initiated a web-based database (https://kenyasdata.com) for KMFRI’s Freshwater directorate, published more than 45 papers in SCI-indexed journals, and has been an investigator in at least more than 15 national, regional, and international projects.
