KMFRI under the newly established Research Directorate on Oceans and Coastal
Systems (OCS).
• I am the Scientist in charge of sea level monitoring in Kenya responsible for producing
tide tables for the ports of Mombasa and Lamu. I am also involved in quality control of
sea level data, analysis and as well as data archiving and documentation.
• I am also the GLOSS Regional Coordinator for Western Indian Ocean region. My
responsibilities are coordinating sea level monitoring and related activities in the WIO
Region and also assisting in the development of GLOSS AFRICA web page.
I spearheaded the sea level component in the GOOS-AFRICA project proposal that aimed
to establish a Regional Ocean Observing and Forecasting System for Africa (ROOFSAFRICA).
I have been involved in Environmental Impact Assessment Studies for (i) Dredging
Kilindini Channel, (ii) Establishment of Experimental/Demonstrational Seaweed Farms
in South Coast, Kenya (iii) Phase One of Lamu Port Construction and (iv) Feasibility
study for Offshore Oil Offloading Jetty at Dongo Kundu.
• I was one of the lead Scientists in two regional research project on “Resilience and
Adaptation of Mangroves and Dependent Communities in the WIO Region to the Impacts
of Climate Change” and “Shoreline Changes in Kenya and Tanzania, Their Socio
Economic Impacts and Mitigation Options”. Both projects were funded by Marine
Science for Management (MASMA) grant of WIOMSA.
From 2009 to 2013, I was the national Cruise Coordinator for Kenya in the GEF–UNDP
funded Agulhas and Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystem (ASCLME) research
project.
• I am currently one of the Scientists in Charge of KMFRI Research Vessel R.V. Mtafiti.
